Worth knowing

Where the cut goes matters

A tree does not heal a cut the way skin does. It grows new wood over it from a ring of tissue where the branch meets the trunk, called the branch collar. A cut just outside that collar closes over in a season or two. A cut flush with the trunk removes the tissue that does the closing, and a long stub dies back and rots.

How much comes off matters too. Taking too much of the living crown in one season starves the tree and pushes out weak, fast sprouts. Topping a tree, cutting it back to stubs, does the same thing on a bigger scale, and the regrowth is weakly attached.
